Convention Update: March 1, 2018

Hello again from Ethel’s accomplices in planning the upcoming 21st International Sons of the Desert Convention, taking place in beautiful Cincinnati, Ohio, USA during the week of July 8-15, 2018. The convention, having the very original moniker of “Cincinnati2018”, presents an opportunity for Laurel and Hardy and classic comedy fans worldwide to come together in celebration of the lives, legacy, and lunacy of Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy.

The attached photo shows Ellen showing off the car she said she “borrowed” from Col. Finn’s Big Show Circus (she said she’d give it back, honestly…).

There are still rooms available at the convention hotel for the super-discounted special rate – please see the ‘Hotel Information’ tab on the convention web site at https://www.laurelandhardy2018.com for more details. However, please don’t wait to make your hotel booking to give you the best chance of taking advantage of this special room rate.

If you and/or your Tent have any items you would wish to be included in the registration goodie bag to be given to all convention registrants, please ensure we receive them prior to June 20; any and all such items may be sent to Karin Thikkurissy (her address is on page 2 of the convention registration form, which is available on the convention web site under the ‘Registration’ tab).

And we remind you again to bring your fezzes and Parade of Tents banners to look like a Son and parade as one while having fun as you walk and not run. Blame Ethel for that and not us.

Those of you ambitious Sons considering putting in a bid to host the 22nd International Sons of the Desert Convention in 2020 should make your wishes known to Cincinnati2018 convention organizers or Bill Oates, Editor of the Intra-Tent Journal at [email protected].

A favorite convention tradition is the Trivia Contest; please see the note below from Quizmaster Rick Greene concerning this year’s event:

CALL FOR TRIVIA QUIZ CONTESTANTS AT CINCINNATI 2018

By Quizmaster Rick Greene

Way back in England 1984, during the Fourth International Sons Of The Desert Convention, a conclave classic was born. Held, appropriately enough, at Oxford, the first Trivia Contest was a simple affair co-hosted by then-ITJ Editor Rick Greene and bagpipe-player Dwain Smith. There were four contestants representing the East, Midwest, West, and International regions and Quizmasters Greene and Smith kept the proceeding lively and informational. Since then, there has been a trivia contest at every International Convention.

Quizmasters Smith and Greene co-hosted the Contest again in 1986 and 1988 and Dwain continued to co-host the Trivia Contest at most of the conventions well into the 21st Century. The contest changed from gathering to gathering, and now instead of individuals, teams of three or four are the quiz configuration, allowing for pooled knowledge but the questions did get harder. At Laurel & Hardywood 2014, Quizmaster Smith reunited with Quizmaster Greene for the first time since 1988 to co-host a hilarious contest that was a Convention highlight.

At the coming 21st International Convention in Cincinnati, once again Quizmaster Greene has been invited to emcee the festivities, which will take place on Saturday morning July 14th, 2018. He will be joined by Quizmaster Brad Farrell (a multiple Contest winner) and Quizmaven David Rodriquez (Scorekeeper Extraordinaire) to continue this Sons tradition.

The 2018 installment will again feature teams – we will have four teams of three members each and this is our official call for Trivia Contest Contestants!  So far, we have two full teams all set. If you would like to participate in this Summer’s Trivia Contest as part of a specific team, or of any team, email Quizmaster Greene at [email protected] or Quizmaster Farrell at [email protected] before April 1st, 2018. We will not be throwing together haphazard Trivia Contest teams on-site as we will have this all set well before we arrive in Cincinnati.

Thanks, Rick. You all read what he said (and I hope you were listening too): Let all who wish to participate in the Trivia Contest make themselves known!

Okay pals – that’s it for this month. Next month we might start getting serious about this whole convention thing.

In the meantime, if you have any questions please check the convention web site and its FAQ page, and you can also contact the convention committee at [email protected] at any time. Ethel thanks you.

Kind regards,

Cincinnati2018 Convention Committee
